Meet The Winners Of The 2019 MullenLowe NOVA Awards
We’re pleased to announce the winners for the 2019 MullenLowe NOVA Awards, created in exclusive partnership with leading art, design and performance college, Central Saint Martins.
From 1,300 graduating students, just six MullenLowe NOVA Awards were presented to students whose work represents truly creative thinking and execution.
2019 MullenLowe NOVA Award Winner:
Fredrik Tjærandsen, BA Fashion Womenswear, ‘Moments of Clarity’
Fredrik’s collection alternates between reality and the dream. It’s made up of large-scale inflatable bubbles which are his visualisation of the moments in life where you become aware of your own mind. The execution was original and truly spectacular and Fredrik is a very deserving winner of the top prize at the 2019 MullenLowe NOVA Awards.
2019 MullenLowe NOVA Award Runners Up:
Elissa Brunato, MA Material Futures, ‘Bio Iridescent Sequin’
In an attempt to combat the reliance on unsustainable material options in the fashion industry, Elissa worked alongside scientists to create sequins using naturally abundant materials, pushing the boundaries of making and presenting a bold vision for the future of fashion and textiles.
Xiaoying Liang, MA Graphic Communication Design, ‘The Dictionary’
Xiaoying’s 3-minute animation experiments with different methods of stretching out, destabilising, interrogating and playing with dictionary definitions from the Oxford English Dictionary to question who has the authority to define things around us.
2019 Unilever #Unstereotype Award Winner:
Sara Gulamali, BA Fine Art 3D, ‘Can You See Me, Still?’
Sara’s project follows a green screen that represents the ‘othered body’ who can’t be identified by race, religion, gender or sexuality. The piece has been inspired by her experiences as a Muslim woman living in today’s society and the feeling that she’s not represented anywhere, reflecting progressive thinking in attempt to break away from outdated stereotypes of people.
2019 Creative Review Innovation Award:
Elissa Brunato, MA Material Futures, ‘Bio Iridescent Sequin’
Elissa’s approach to making sequins has the potential to outshine the previous unsustainable material options in a way that is more forward-thinking and innovative, which is why she also takes home the inaugural Creative Review Innovation Award for her work.
2019 YourNOVA Award Winner:
Haemin Ko, MA Character Animation, ‘No Body’
Haemin’s short animation film tells the story of her journey in London. Hand-drawn frame by frame, the autobiographical piece explores her relationship with the city through three emotional chapters of excitement, frustration and hope.
The Winner, two Runners Up and recipients of the Unilever #Unstereotype Award and Creative Review Innovation Award have been chosen by the MullenLowe NOVA Awards expert judges, while the YourNOVA Award has been chosen by online public vote.
Many congratulations to all of our winners!
