One Year On: Fredrik Tjærandsen
The winner of the 2019 MullenLowe NOVA Awards was Fredrik Tjærandsen with his incredible project, ‘Moments of Clarity’. The collection was made of balloon-like inflatable garments which blurred the lines of fashion and performance, and immediately caught attention from fashion titles from Vogue to Vice’s I-D.
With the 2020 MullenLowe NOVA Awards in full swing, we caught up with Fredrik to see what he’s been up to in the last year.
What have you been up to since winning a MullenLowe NOVA Award? Any exhibitions, collaborations or new career plans?
I have had an amazing year and worked on some great projects! I was invited to do a showcase under Fashion in Motion at the V&A January 2020, and I worked with SHOWstudio alongside Nick Knight and Wayne McGregor on fashion film TORUS, a film dedicated to my work. I was also featured in DAZED and nominated for the Dazed 100!
How has winning help further your work?
I’ve had a lot of amazing opportunities after graduating. The funding I received helped me push my work beyond the graduate collection in the projects I took on. It allowed me to take more risks and it really helped me elevate my work and vision.
Have you done anything exiting with the prize money yet?
The prize money helped fund the material cost of the new bubbles I made and presented at the V&A.
What are your plans for the future?
I want to be able to work self-sufficiently and enjoy creative freedom. I hope to create a business that allows me to explore my vision for years to come, and allows me to work in alignment with my values, keeping the integrity of the message and art I create.
